The Truth About…Law (Part 4)

Let’s conclude this month’s blogs on law by examining  what happens  when the rule of law is followed.  As the last blog showed, when the rule of men is what governs, then the governed suffer.  However, when governments follow the rule of law, the people can be free.  Consider the following benefits of subscribing to a Christian worldview of law.

In this worldview, the ultimate authority is God, not the state.  Leaders need to understand that there is a higher authority than them, and we can judge good and bad leaders with God’s standards.  Our Founders understood this.  Although they were not perfect, they understood that no human being is above the law.  That’s why the President will be sworn into office while taking his oath on the Bible, and that the same President can be impeached for breaking the laws of the land.

Next, following a Christian worldview of law maintains rights and order.  Since we believe that human rights are a gift of God, not a privilege from the government, they cannot be taken away since the government didn’t issue them.  In the Declaration of Independence it says, “all men are created equal” and they are “endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights,” namely “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.”  God gives us rights; they are not issued by a ruling body.  This mindset benefits society, since it is the basis for freedom and prosperity.

To illustrate that, read what a Chinese Academy of Social Sciences professor said about the greatness of America.  These social science researchers were trying to see what made America great.  At first they thought it was the economic system; then they thought it was the political system.  After examining the issue for 20 years, here was their undeniable conclusion:

“But in the past twenty years, we have realized that the heart of your culture is your religion: Christianity. That is why the West has been so powerful. The Christian moral foundation of social and cultural life was what made possible the emergence of capitalism and then the successful transition to democratic politics. We don’t have any doubt about this.”

Why follow a Christian worldview of law?  Because even Communists in China can see that this worldview has led America to preeminence over the world in terms of freedom and prosperity.
