Does the Bible have errors? (Part 1)

In the past two blogs we’ve established that the Bible is an extremely reliable document, without parallel in ancient literature, passing all bibliographical tests. But some will still say that the Bible should be disregarded since it is full of contradictions. To answer that charge, Christians need to know that the Bible is without contradiction or error. Another word for this is inerrant. To show this, the Bible must pass an internal evidence test. In other words, if you read it from cover to cover, you won’t find any contradictions. Besides actually reading the entire Bible, an excellent resource to respond to this charge is the book Does the Bible Contradict Itself? by William Arndt.

Christians believe that the Bible is inerrant, or without contradiction, because God is the Author who inspired the writers. Moreover, there are verses to testify to its perfection, like Psalm 119:160, “All your words are true; all your righteous laws are eternal,” and John 17:17, “‘Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.’” Yet people will rightfully argue that you can’t use the Bible to prove that the Bible is true. Correct. That is why you must read it from start to finish to look for contradictions. Too often people will say, “The Bible is full of contradictions.” All you have to do is respond, “Could you please name one?” That will be countered with, “Well, I don’t know of any off the top of my head, but that’s what I’ve heard.”

Here’s where you must be ready to do—remember what Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:24-26. It says, “And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.”

Instead of belittling the person since they have no facts to back up their assertion, you can gently instruct them in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth—that there are no contradictions!
